LED Traffic Lights Saving Lives, Money

This story out of Massillon, OH tells about how new LED traffic lights being installed in Western Stark County will save energy while reducing accidents. The new signals feature black back plates outlined with reflective yellow tape and brighter, more energy efficient LED lights. The new design is said to increase visibility of the signals especially at night and during bad weather. The 17 watt LED bulbs in the signals are brighter then the older 135 watt incandescent bulbs they replace and are expected to last many times longer. Older incanescent traffic signal bulbs last around a year. The new LED bulbs will last 7 to 10 years. One local resident left a comment about LED streetlights, "I nearly ran a red light when I was unable to decide what light was lit. We have the LED signals in our area. Perhaps I am spoiled."
